#ThrowbackThursday We came across a Dedication Program book from 1990 for the newly constructed Birdsboro Elementary Center! 📚✨ Inside, it includes pages on the history of education in Birdsboro, going all the way back to the 1850s. It’s fascinating to see how education has evolved over the years! 🏫💡 #BirdsboroHistory #Throwback #TBT

Dedication Program and Open House Tuesday September 11, 1990 7:00 PM 400 West Second Street, Birdsboro, PA
The Mill Street School was razed in 1884 for the "right-of-way" of the Pennsylvania Railroad. It was then replaced by a four room brick building on Cinder Street. The Cinder Street School and the East First Street School remained in service until the Lincoln Elementary Building opened in 1912. The Brooklyn School was enlarged and a second floor added to house classes for Birdsboro High School. In these early times, teachers would signal the opening of the day's classes by the ringing of a small bell. Many teachers were their own janitors, keeping the fire in winter, sweeping the floor, and cleaning the room. Youngsters were permitted to attend sessions barefooted in late spring. Children of Civil War Veterans, living outside the community, were given permission to attend classes at "no-charge". Until the "free text book system" was adopted, pupils used slates. In winter time if the room temperature fell below forty-five degrees classes were dismissed for the day.
In 1956 pursuing a statewide pattern of consolidation, the school districts of Amity Township, Union Township, and Birdsboro formed the Daniel Boone Jointure. The plan called for the Roosevelt Building to be used as a junior high unit; the Amity complex to remain as a senior high class area; and the Monocacy, Lincoln, and Washington Schools to continue as elementary centers. The Roosevelt Building was renovated as an elementary unit. A serious fire occurred at the Roosevelt School in August, 1966. The two townships, Amity and Union, and Birdsboro became a unified school district in 1966. The Roosevelt Building was razed in 1990 after students moved into the new Birdsboro Elementary Center, located on the same site. Part of the tradition was preserved with installation of the Roosevelt tablets in the new building entrance which read "Enter to Learn" - "Go Forth to Serve"
